42 Years Ago Today: A Lesson That Still Shapes Our Dojo

Kyoto - Training with Hirokazu Kanazaw 198442 years ago today, I was just a white belt — only a few weeks away from my very first grading.

At that stage, like many beginners, I was simply trying to understand the basics. Balance, coordination, remembering techniques… everything felt new.

But on that day, something happened that would stay with me for life.

It was the first time I had the opportunity to train with Hirokazu Kanazawa — and the first time I had ever trained with any Japanese instructor.

Kyoto - Training with Kanazawa 1984At the time, I was only meant to take part in the beginner session.

After that class finished, I stayed behind to watch the advanced session.

No expectation. No intention of joining in.
Just curiosity — and a real desire to learn.

But Kanazawa Sensei had a way of noticing things that others might miss.

He saw that keenness… and called me onto the floor to join the advanced class.

I was still a white belt.

No rank. No experience at that level.
Just an opportunity — given because of attitude.

The Lesson That Lasts a Lifetime

That moment taught me something far more important than any single technique:

Karate is not just about ability — it’s about mindset.

It’s about:

  • Turning up with the right attitude
  • Being willing to watch, listen, and learn
  • Showing quiet determination, even when no one is asking you to

Those qualities don’t go unnoticed.

And when they’re there, doors open.

How This Shapes Kyoto Shotokan Karate Dojo Today

At Kyoto Shotokan Karate Dojo, this is something we still believe in strongly.

We look for:

  • effort over ego
  • attitude over grade
  • consistency over short bursts of motivation

Because every experienced karateka started exactly the same way — as a beginner.

And sometimes, it’s not the most talented student who progresses the furthest…

…it’s the one who stays behind, watches, and wants to learn just that little bit more.
