We are delighted to announce that Kyōtō Shotokan Karate Dōjō has been named Best Martial Arts Club in the Business Awards UK 2026 Sports and Leisure Awards.
The award recognises excellence within the sports and leisure sector and celebrates organisations that demonstrate outstanding commitment to their members, communities, and the development of their chosen discipline.
For everyone connected with Kyōtō, this recognition is particularly meaningful as 2026 marks the club’s 30th anniversary year.
Founded in Bristol in 1996, Kyōtō Shotokan Karate Dōjō has spent three decades promoting traditional Shotokan karate while striving to create an environment where people of all ages and abilities can train together. From complete beginners taking their first steps onto the dojo floor to experienced black belts continuing their lifelong study of karate, the club has always sought to make training accessible, welcoming, and rewarding.
The award is not recognition of any one individual. Rather, it reflects the efforts of an entire dojo community.

Over the years, hundreds of students have trained at Kyōtō. Many have gone on to achieve grading success, competition medals, instructor qualifications, referee certifications, and national squad selection. Yet some of the club’s greatest achievements cannot be measured in trophies or certificates. The confidence gained by a shy beginner, the friendships formed between families, the support offered during difficult times, and the simple commitment shown by students who continue training year after year are equally important parts of the dojo’s story.
As Chief Instructor, I would like to thank every student, parent, instructor, volunteer, committee member, and supporter who has contributed to the club’s success over the past thirty years.
I would also like to acknowledge the wider SKIF community, whose guidance, friendship, and support have played an important role throughout Kyōtō’s journey.
The name Kyōtō (橋頭) translates as bridgehead—a place from which a journey begins. For many people, karate starts as a desire to learn self-defence, improve fitness, or try something new. Over time, it often becomes something much more significant: a lifelong path of self-development, perseverance, and friendship.
This award belongs to everyone who has crossed that bridge with us.
While we are honoured to receive this recognition, our focus remains unchanged. We will continue working to provide high-quality traditional Shotokan karate instruction, support the development of our students, and ensure that Kyōtō remains a welcoming place where individuals and families can train together for many years to come.
Thank you to everyone who has been part of our story so far.
The journey continues.
Oss.
“This award belongs to everyone who has crossed that bridge with us.”
— Steve Ashby, Founder & Chief Instructor, Kyōtō Shotokan Karate Dōjō (橋頭)
