The SKIF-GB Wales & Southwest Regional Squad returns this May for a focused Squad Development Session, bringing together karateka from across the region to train, refine, and raise standards together.

These sessions are an important part of the ongoing development of competitors within SKIF-GB, providing a structured environment where athletes can work on the details that often make the difference—timing, distance, control, and decision-making under pressure.

What These Sessions Are About

Squad sessions are not just about intensity—they are about precision.

Across the Wales & Southwest region, these sessions help bring together different clubs, instructors, and competitors under a shared standard. They provide an opportunity to:

  • Develop kumite timing and tactical awareness
  • Refine movement, distance, and positioning
  • Build confidence under pressure
  • Align with regional and national expectations

It’s also where athletes begin to understand what separates general training from competition-level performance.

Developing the Region

The continued growth of the Wales & Southwest squad reflects the strength of the region, with clubs working together to support the development of athletes at all levels.

Sessions like this contribute directly to:

  • Preparing competitors for SKIF-GB National Championships
  • Supporting those aiming for international selection
  • Raising the overall standard across all affiliated dojos

The Kyōtō Perspective

At Kyōtō Shotokan Karate Dojo (Bristol), we see squad training as part of a wider journey.

Progress in karate is rarely instant. The fundamentals developed in regular training—kihon, structure, and understanding—begin to show their value more clearly in environments like this. Under pressure, with pace and intent, those “seeds” that are planted in the dojo start to take shape.

These sessions act as a bridge between everyday training and applied performance—where technique must hold up, decisions must be made quickly, and mindset becomes just as important as movement.

Train Together. Improve Together. Represent Together.

The Wales & Southwest Squad continues to provide a platform for karateka across the region to come together, challenge themselves, and represent their clubs and associations with pride.
